At work today, i needed to speak with an associate in another department about a fiscal matter of great importance. There was a client at the reception desk who needed assistance and my ability to help the person was dependent on information the associate had. When I went to the coworker's desk, she was on the phone. It quickly became apparent that it was a personal call as she chatted about her anniversary plans, her potential move to NC, and her 6 year old daughter's latest antics, all while I stood there waiting. She put up one finger in the universal "just one minute" gesture, so I waited. When she launched into yet another story a Bahamas cruise she had won on the radio, and it could hear it was her mother who lives out of state, i started getting annoyed, began sighing loudly to which she responded with another "just a minute" gesture. The customer was waiting and so was I. What is the proper thing to do in such a situation....be patient and wait it out for a short while longer or interrupt telling her i need her assistance to get a emergent situation resolved? |
