I am a county government supervisor of seven employees, all of whom are hourly workers. The work day is 8:30am - 5:00 pm. I have one employee who always seems to want to slip out 5-10 minutes before five. I mean her computer is turned off, her office is dark, she has her purse on her shoulder and she is walking out the door and it is not 5pm yet. She says she is trying to "beat traffic". She also takes several smoke breaks throughout the day. Nobody else does this. Today, when she was getting ready to leave the building at 4:50pm, I called her on it. She said HER watch said 4:55pm. And???? I'm a pretty easy going boss typically. She's a hard worker and we get along well, but I think this is not cool or fair skimming time off her day EVERY day when her time sheet says she works until 5pm. Should I:
a) Be anal. Tell her that the clock on the computer is considered the office's official time. Don't leave the office before FIVE!

b) Be flexible. Let it slide seeing as how she is otherwise a hard worker. |
